The Truth from a Month of Working Abroad by George Richings

Insights

Last month, I had the pleasure of spending a month working abroad. It was an eye-opening experience that offered a mix of challenges and rewards. Here’s what I learned from my time away:

1. The Reality of WiFi

No matter how good your host assures you the WiFi is, always be prepared to run a cable around the apartment. The promise of high-speed internet doesn’t always match reality, and a stable connection is essential for productive work.

2. The Power of Focused Work

I discovered that blocks of focused work allow you to get more done in a shorter space of time. Without the usual office distractions, I found I could concentrate better and be more productive in less time.

3. Avoiding Low-Value Tasks

When you have extra time, it’s easy to fill your day with low-value tasks. Being aware of this helps in prioritising meaningful work and ensuring you don’t waste time on things that don’t matter.

4. Office Independence

I realised I can achieve the same results without being based in an office. With the right mindset and tools, remote work can be just as effective as being physically present in the office.

5. Staying Connected

Despite frequent Teams updates, I felt disconnected from the business. There’s something about face-to-face interactions and being part of the office buzz that virtual meetings can’t quite replicate.

6. A Perfect Duration

One month abroad is perfect. It’s long enough to immerse yourself in a new environment and routine, but not so long that you feel completely out of the loop with your usual life.

7. Family Bonds

The bond I developed with my daughter during this month is irreplaceable. Spending more quality time together without the rush of daily commutes and long office hours strengthened our relationship.

8. Household Chores

Washing, cooking, and cleaning have to be done, wherever you are. Being abroad doesn’t exempt you from these daily tasks, but sharing them can make them more enjoyable.

9. Quality Time with My Wife

Conversation and card games with my wife trump TV every time. These simple activities brought us closer and created lovely memories that we’ll cherish.

10. Simple Joys

A beach picnic and an ice cream after a day’s work is the best. It’s the little pleasures like these that make working abroad truly special.

Should You Do It?

If you can, should you work abroad? Absolutely! The experience offers a unique blend of personal and professional growth that is well worth it.

Working abroad for a month was a fantastic experience that taught me a lot about productivity, family, and the importance of balance. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend giving it a try.
