Fractional Financial Controller

Employment type: Interim
Salary: 500/day - 600/day

GUILDFORD - ALMOST 100% REMOTE - 2-3 DAYS PER WEEK, ONGOING - BUILD THE FINANCE FUNCTION IN A SEED-BACKED BUSINESS

£500-£600 per day

Are you a fractional Financial Controller with room in your portfolio for a two to three day engagement? Do you like taking on an early-stage finance function that nobody has built yet?

We Do Group are working with an early-stage, seed-backed B2B data and intelligence business, recruiting a Fractional Financial Controller for two to three days a week on an ongoing basis. The company is two years old and growing quickly, and this is its first finance hire. You'd be engaged through your own limited company.

There's no finance function to inherit here. The transactional work currently sits partly with the founder and partly with two outsourced firms, and the reporting it produces doesn't tell the business what it needs to know. The first few months are about control, getting the payment runs, payroll and filings running properly under one owner. What the function looks like after that is largely yours to decide.

The founder wants recommendations as well as clean numbers, so this suits somebody who'll form a view on the setup and say so. He's Guildford-based and wants to meet you before handing over bank access. Days may flex up as the business grows, and there's a funding round on the horizon.

WISH LIST

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) working on a fractional or portfolio basis
  • A track record of owning and building finance functions in founder-led businesses, including the transactional layer
  • Someone who'll advise on how the function should be structured and enjoys the journey of getting there

THE ROLE

  • Take ownership of the whole finance function: AP, AR, banking, payroll, VAT and statutory filings
  • Run the payment cycle, including multi-currency transfers and payments to international contractors
  • Hold the bank relationship and the day-to-day treasury
  • Deliver the monthly close and a management pack that works for investors
  • Take over the external accountant and bookkeeper relationships, and restructure them if needed
  • Build forecasting and KPI reporting around subscription and renewal performance
  • Keep the balance sheet clean and the controls tight
  • Handle VAT, corporation tax, year end and R&D tax credits with external advisers
  • Automate what can be automated, using AI tooling where it earns its place
  • Review the software stack and supplier contracts, and take out cost that's sitting idle
  • Produce board and investor reporting, and support the next funding round
  • Leave behind documented processes that hold up as the business scales

YOUR PROFILE

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA)
  • Effective communicator - written and verbal
  • Good working knowledge of MS Excel
  • Experienced SME finance operator
  • Enjoys the hands on, autonomous nature of these type of roles

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • £500-£600 per day, outside IR35
  • Two to three days a week, with scope to flex up
  • Engaged through your own limited company
  • Almost entirely remote, with the founder based in Guildford
