What Finance Candidates Want in 2026 (It’s Not Just Salary)

Insights

For years, salary has been the headline act in recruitment conversations. It’s often the first question candidates ask and one of the first details employers highlight in a job advert.

But in 2026, the finance recruitment landscape has shifted.

Competitive pay will always matter, especially in a market where specialist finance talent remains in high demand. Yet salary alone is no longer enough to attract, or retain, the very best professionals.

Today’s finance candidates are weighing up the whole employment proposition. They’re looking beyond the pay packet and asking bigger questions about flexibility, career development, leadership, purpose and long-term opportunity.

For employers competing for top finance talent, understanding these changing expectations is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s a competitive advantage.

Salary Gets Attention. The Overall Package Wins Decisions.

Let’s be clear. Salary still matters. In fact, Robert Half’s 2026 UK Finance & Accounting Salary Guide found that 67% of finance hiring managers are willing to increase salaries when there is a shortage of qualified talent, highlighting just how competitive the market remains for experienced finance professionals.

However, candidates are increasingly evaluating opportunities based on the complete employee experience rather than salary alone. When two employers offer similar pay, it’s often the surrounding package that determines which offer is accepted.

Flexibility Has Become an Expectation

Hybrid working is no longer viewed as a workplace perk. For many finance professionals, it’s simply how modern work should operate. While organisations continue refining their return-to-office strategies, candidates are looking for employers that trust them to deliver results rather than measure productivity by desk time.

Research from Robert Half found that 73% of UK professionals believe they are more productive when working in a hybrid environment, even as more employers encourage greater office attendance.

That doesn’t mean every candidate wants to work remotely full-time. Many value office collaboration, mentoring and team interaction. What they increasingly want is choice, flexibility and clarity.

Employers that communicate their hybrid working approach transparently from the outset often create a stronger candidate experience than those leaving expectations until the interview stage.

Career Development Matters More Than Ever

The best finance professionals aren’t just looking for their next role. They’re looking for their next chapter. Candidates increasingly ask questions like:

  • What does progression look like?
  • Will I gain exposure to commercial decision-making?
  • Can I develop leadership skills?
  • Is there investment in professional development?

According to Robert Half’s 2026 Salary Guide, 69% of UK employees would trade a pay rise for structured learning, professional development or digital upskilling opportunities.

That’s a significant shift. It demonstrates that ambitious professionals are thinking beyond immediate earnings and investing in long-term career growth. Businesses that actively support learning, mentoring and internal progression are often far more attractive than those competing on salary alone.

Leadership and Culture Influence Every Decision

Candidates don’t just join businesses. They join managers. The interview process is no longer one-sided. Finance professionals are assessing leadership teams just as carefully as employers assess candidates. They’re asking themselves:

  • Will I be trusted?
  • Is there transparency from leadership?
  • Do people collaborate across the business?
  • Will my contribution genuinely be valued?

A strong culture isn’t about ping-pong tables or free coffee. It’s about clear communication, supportive leadership and an environment where people can perform at their best. Increasingly, candidates are choosing organisations where they can see themselves building a career, not simply accepting their next pay cheque.

Purpose Is Becoming a Differentiator

Finance has evolved significantly over the last decade. Today’s finance professionals are strategic partners to the business, influencing decisions rather than simply reporting numbers. As a result, candidates want to understand how their work contributes to wider business success.

They want to know:

  • What is the company’s vision?
  • Where is the business heading?
  • How will this role make an impact?
  • Is there genuine investment in innovation and technology?

People are motivated when they understand the bigger picture. Purpose creates engagement. Engagement drives retention.

A Better Recruitment Experience Matters

The candidate experience often becomes the first impression of an organisation’s culture. Slow communication, lengthy interview processes, delayed feedback and unclear expectations. These don’t just frustrate candidates, they can actively damage an employer’s reputation.

The strongest finance professionals are frequently involved in multiple recruitment processes at the same time. If your hiring journey feels disorganised or indecisive, candidates may conclude the business operates the same way internally. Fast doesn’t mean rushed, it means organised, communicative and respectful of people’s time.

So, What Do Finance Candidates Really Want?

In 2026, the answer is balance. Competitive salary remains important. But alongside that, candidates are looking for:

  • Competitive and transparent remuneration.
  • Flexible and hybrid working where appropriate.
  • Clear career progression and learning opportunities.
  • Supportive leadership.
  • A positive and inclusive culture.
  • Meaningful work with visible business impact.
  • An efficient, respectful recruitment process.

The employers who recognise these priorities will consistently outperform those relying on salary alone.

Final Thoughts

The finance recruitment market continues to evolve, and so do candidate expectations. The businesses attracting the strongest talent aren’t necessarily those offering the highest salaries. They’re the ones offering the strongest overall proposition.

At We Do Group, we speak to finance professionals every day, from Accounts Assistants and Management Accountants through to Finance Directors and CFOs. We understand what motivates today’s candidates because we’re having those conversations every day. That insight allows us to help our clients build compelling opportunities that go beyond salary and connect with what finance professionals are really looking for.

Whether you’re hiring your next finance professional or considering your own next career move, understanding what matters most to today’s candidates is the first step towards making the right decision. In a competitive market, it’s not just about offering more, it’s about offering what matters.
